Hi guys. After a long long time I am trying to finish up one of my living sea series guitars. I have been looking for the top wood for weeks, and finally found a bookmatched set of uniquely quilted maple. My question is- if I am planning on the luthier doing a Les Paul style body with the top carved as it is suppossed to look like, should I expect the wood pattern to radically change? If so is a flat top Les Paul going to look that nice? For me part of what makes it work is the body carve. has anybody here made Les paul bodies before? Thanks I have pics of the wood if needed. Hard to say, but generally, the figure stays very similar throughout. Compare the top and the back of the piece, see where the differences lie, and think of how that extrapolates. I haven't made Les Pauls, but I've done my share of PRS-type carves. |

I would expect a difference that much more noticeable than other wood choices. Quilted maple isn't consistent like flamed maple. It should still look great if the quilt is strong enough. |

Craig: Consider calling a guy named Terry McInturff. He's a boutique electric builder who does A LOT of what you talk about. His guitars are nothing short of staggering. You can find him on the web. Terry is as genuine as a person can get. I bet he'd answer the question for you. Bill |

Mattia is right. Look at the board on both sides. If if the figure is about the same quality on both sides it will look great. However to expect it will look the "EXACT SAME" probably won't happen. |
